Government Reveals Rule Changes Regarding '£500 Jackpot Slot Machines' in Bingo Premises

On Wednesday 25th June the government's sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe made a long overdue announcement. He informed the gambling industry that the limit of '£500 jackpot slot machines' in bingo halls accross the UK would be raised from four to eight. Gerry Sutcliffe is reported to have made his statement on Wednesday because he believes that the UK's gaming industry needs help. Clearly he has read some of the major give away signs such as the fact that 15% of the UK's halls have closed over the last four years. In recognition of the hall's importance the Minister for sport stated, "The clubs play a crucial role in many communities and we want to see that continue. For some people, especially older and retired women, the game is their main leisure pursuit. It is therefore of great concern that nearly 100 bingo clubs have closed in the last four years," Since the ministers's statement opposing MP's have been critical. But for once, perhaps they really do have a point! They have said that rather than changing rules such as the number of '£500 jackpot slot machines' allowed on gaming presmises, such as, 'Mecca Halls' the government should be lowering taxes towards bingo. This point has sparked alot of controversy. Not least because the industry is the only industry which has a hugely unfair double taxation rate set against it. A source has suggested that for each hall which closes the government can expect to lose somewhere in the region of £700,000 a year. So, maybe the government needs to do some more careful thinking?
